Our Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm hourly rates for short jobs:

We charge a minimum $160 service call fee, which includes sixty minutes or less of work for very short jobs + $60/hr after the first hour. You will pay exactly as much as it takes or costs to do the job.

Plus we charge DOUBLE for parts & materials. Here is why

We do free estimates for jobs worth
about $2000 or more. And our overall
rates for large projects are lower.

We charge $20 to $30 higher service call fee and higher hourly rate in downtown or where parking is not free, restricted, hard to find and in buildings where getting around is difficult or time consuming.

And we charge higher rates if the property is far away.

Please have enough cash or certified cheque on hand. Why? Because every 15th or so regular cheque we receive gets bounced and its enforcement costs us too much money. Actually, we are absolutely defenseless and powerless when a $300 or $600 cheque gets bounced, stopped or NSF. We can not afford wasting many hours in a small claims court trying to get paid.

So, a cash payment, certified cheque or another form of payment guaranteed by a bank is due right after electrician has finished the job. Time is counted from the moment an electrician has entered the site to the moment the electrician is paid and ready to leave. So please have the certified cheque, more than enough cash on hand, or another form of guaranteed payment readily available to avoid expensive delays.

Invoice or receipt is issued on the spot.

We charge 100% higher price for our materials and parts. Or we charge double retail price comparing to when you buy the materials and parts yourself by the piece or by the meter.

Example, if one meter of wire costs $2 in a Home Hardware or Canadian Tire store, you would have to pay our electrician $4 for one meter of the same wire.

We use ONLY your materials, all of them. Including smallest, tiniest $0.01 cent screws. Naturally, we charge NOTHING for the materials because we would not use any of our stuff.

Why do we charge double retail price for our materials comparing to that when you buy parts yourself by the piece or by the meter?

Because we spend our time buying the materials and keeping enough of all necessary items in the vehicle.

And we spend time stocking and restocking those materials in the van to have them readily available for your particular job. Various jobs require different materials. So we have to spend 30 to 40 minutes every morning preparing for the day's work. We have to take out from the vehicle some unnecessary stuff and load-in materials required for today. This is a part of our work. We spend time and effort doing it. Our time and our labor costs money. We do not work for free and therefore we charge our customers more for materials.

We have to stock much more parts in the vehicle than a single particular job requires. Why? Because if we needed a single screw or a connector and if it was not there, then we wouldn't have been able to complete the job.

So we always drive around with 800 kilograms or so of spare parts in the vehicle. And it takes gas. Some of the materials we carry a year or two before we use them. So gasoline expense makes our parts even more expensive. And if we did not have that single screw or connector, then we should go and buy it. One part worth $3 takes 50 min to buy on average including driving time. But it could take 3 hours or more to find and buy.

So should we charge you $200 or so for our time of finding and buying the $0.01 cent screw or $3 connector? Or should we do it for free? We don't think so. Instead we charge a reasonable and affordable 100% higher average price for our materials and parts.

Storage of the materials at the company base requires space. We have to pay for the storage space.

Obviously, we can not compete in price with retail stores we buy the materials from. Their electrical section is 1000 times bigger than our vehicle in size, they carry inventory of 100,000 electrical items, they have thousands of customers and a turnover of millions of dollars.

If you decided to buy materials yourself you would have to drive to the store and then spend time finding the right stuff, paying for it and driving it back. So your $30 material purchase becomes $100 or $250 expenditure depending of how high you value your leisure time or what is your pay rate at work. And then what if you have bought the wrong stuff, or installer unfriendly? When an electrician comes he would not be able to work because of that. What if you forgot to get that single screw or connector? You will have to drive back and spend another half an hour to three hours on buying them. What about frustration/stress, wasted time, money and possible argument or even a conflict?

We either use ONLY our materials, all of them. Or we use ONLY your materials, all of them. Including smallest, tiniest $0.01 cent screws. Why? Because we will arrive with our materials already in the van. We will have already spent time and effort. Nevertheless, we would still be willing to use your materials ONLY. And charge NOTHING extra. Hopefully you would save $10 to $100 if you had hundreds of various parts, wires, boxes, connectors, screws, etc. in stock.

Please chose and let us know whether you wanted to supply all the materials and parts yourself or ready to pay double for our stuff.

FYI:

Knob and Tube is an old two wire system where lights, plugs and receptacles are not grounded.

From 1880's it was widely used through the 1930's. In some locations installed into the late 1950's. Years ago there were few electrical appliances, electricity usage and loads were limited. K&T was the best and only option.

The wires were spliced and soldered together inside walls, without junction boxes, and then wrapped with electrical tape. Wiring was rubber and cloth covered #14 copper mounted on porcelain Knobs nailed to the wood studs and joists. When required to pass through the wood, porcelain Tubes were inserted in holes with the conductors inside. Knob and Tube wiring therefore never touched the wood structure or plaster. Heat from load or overload dissipated in the air space between rafters and partitions. These circuits originally could be protected by 20 Amp plug fuses. Do not use fuses or breakers over 15 Amp today.

Visual inspection of conductors and splices can determine state of Knob and Tube integrity nowadays. Conductors with bare or dry, crumbling or stiff insulation should be replaced. These conditions resulted from over-current, shorts, improper fusing, high temperatures or natural aging. Problems are usually found in switch, plug, and junction boxes, in attics, furnace or boiler rooms and especially above the lights.

K&T circuit extensions and additional loads should be avoided. Splicing new wires with Knob and Tube is not advisable. Over-fusing with 20 Amp or more is dangerous.

When installed correctly Knob and Tube wiring suspended in the air could carry higher current without overheating. It's a single advantage over the contemporary wiring.

Knob and tube wiring, on its own, is not inherently a problem. Wiring that has deteriorated or been abused is.

On the other hand, the ancient knob-and-tube wiring introduced more than 120 years ago at the dawn of electrification does not belong to a 21-century home. So take a big breath and just replace it. That's the best and the safest step you could take.

In addition, generations of handymen and previous unskilled owners have been abusing your home wiring for decades. Inspection is indispensable for older than 50 year old homes. Together we could bring your house up to code and make your home really safe!

Few tips from an Electrical Contractor prospective for those trying to get into an electrician apprenticeship.

Never call Electrical Contractors. That is the worst thing you can do. ECs are busy people and such calls usually come at the worst time when we are working, or talking to a customer, or are at the important meeting. Five calls a day will drive crazy any EC. Therefore, just NEVER, EVER, EVER call Electrical Contractors to ask if they needed an apprentice.

The best and less intrusive way is obviously emailing your resume. Even if I did not need an apprentice at the moment I would keep an interesting resume received via email and find it at a later date.

The following are the MOST IMPORTANT TIPS as to how to increase YOUR chances of getting the electrical apprenticeship.

1. Think of what Electrical Contractors want. Put yourself in their shoes. Forget what you want completely. Offer something that an EC may need. Offer a benefit or at least something interesting, or useful. Be creative. Surprise me with something I might want and you can help me to get.

2. There are various government labor and employment agencies offering financial incentives to Electrical Contractors if they hired an apprentice electrician. Go and get familiar with those programs. And find an agency to back your application up with such incentives. Obtain application forms and instead of "looking for a challenging position" indicate these incentives in you resume. And also write down that you were willing to do all the paper work, fill in the forms, and deliver them to the agency all by yourself. Why? Because I tried once to take on an apprentice but was overwhelmed with the forms, paperwork, and bureaucratic hurdles. After spending several hours I gave up and let the applicant go.

3. Do not wait for your chance while doing nothing. Go get any construction or renovation job. Such experience is invaluable. ECs pay attention and appreciate time you worked on construction and renovation. Or go and get additional technical courses. Here is the best advice I may offer. Go and learn how to do wire fishing. The TV cable and network Cat 5 or Cat 6 wire fishing work does not require a license. But this experience is in very high demand among residential Electrical Contractors working on finished houses. In fact, I found it next to impossible to hire a reasonably priced wire fishing PRO with his own car and tools. And while waiting for the apprenticeship you can make a very good living doing the wire fishing and network cabling work.

4. Go buy a high quality electrician's hand tools and a pouch. Ideally, you will have a brand name cordless drill as well. Include this in your resume.

5. Show your willingness to get in and even to work for free for a couple of days. That would demonstrate your drive towards becoming an apprentice Electrician in Toronto. Your commitment is very important to us... Decent ECs will pay you anyway even during the trial period.

6. Be ready to do the dirtiest, hardest and least skilled work. Understandably, instead of doing such work myself I will give it to you. And if I smell reluctance or unwillingness I will NOT hire you. So show your enthusiasm no matter what.

7. Do EXCLUDE useless blah, blah, blah, from your resume like:

Seeking position as an electrical apprentice within a progressive and forward thinking company (what if my company is not a "forward thinking one"?)
I am keen to get more challenges and chances to prove myself.
I am seeking for a position in your company that will challenge my skills and continue my growth
Able to learn new skills quickly and think independently
Motivated, reliable, punctual young man looking to obtain a position in a company, where I can utilize the technical skills and comprehensive professional training
To gain employment in an established company where I may utilize my skills to the best of my ability.
To find an opportunity to increase my knowledge, and use it to the benefit of your company
I am an accountable individual who is able to complete any task given with a positive approach
Having excellent communication skills not only allows me to work independently, but as a team member
I am very organized, hard working and willing to learn new material
Evidence of my leadership and electrical skills can be seen through my commitment to academics
Fast learner who works equally well as part of a team or autonomously
Thrive in a dynamic and challenging environment
Seeking employment in a strong and progressive organization
Self-motivated with the ability to produce and deliver results ahead of schedule
A decision maker, well organized, resourceful and able to lead
To start my career while greatly benefiting your company
Hobbies, sport

We already know that you have got all these skills and abilities. And we do not have time to read this BS.

Instead give a short list of what you can do with your hands and list actual hands on experience or what you really can do with your hands.

8. I personally prefer to receive resumes in the email body and NOT as an attachment. Why? Because it is faster to see and to read and it is easily searchable. Attached resume requires more of my time and frankly I just delete those emails with attached resumes. Sorry. (Remember I told you to think what an employer wants or likes? As an average human being I want to save my time and I like things done my way. Period.)

9. If hired, never stay idle. If you have nothing to do, don't hide from your foreman or EC. Go and ask your boss or others what you can do next. And if no one is around then clean around, take the garbage out, sweep the floors. There is always something left to do. Just think about it, search for it, and just do it. Electrical Contractor will know 90% about who you are as a man in about three days. It will take several more days for him to figure out how good you are with your head and hands.

10. Read three or four "self improvement" books like "how to get one hundred friends" or "how to succeed in life". All those books say basically one thing - be good to other people, think in advance whether your action would benefit or hurt others, treat others the way you want them to treat you (treat them even better). That would be my second MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE.

11. Never be late, do ask questions if you don't know or are not sure about something. Better ask 100 times than make one mistake. And do not do something that is risky or dangerous. No matter what, just don't do it.

12. Place your employer's interests ahead of your own. To some extend you will have to limit yourself in chasing girls, drinking and partying till next morning. If you were late, or sleepy, or still half drunk I would let you go to continue partying.
